Lecture outline

Discover the mixed business model driving modern theatre. Using Curve as a primary case study, this lecture explores how commercial, charitable, and social missions successfully interconnect to build a thriving arts organisation.

Chris has served as CEO of Curve since 2015, leading the venue alongside Artistic Director Nikolai Foster. Together, they have grown Curve’s turnover by £12m+, increased audiences by 30%, and built an acclaimed international touring programme reaching up to two million people annually. In 2025, Chris concurrently served as Interim Executive Director of Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, leading a major twelve-month financial and business turnaround. Over his career, Chris has overseen nearly 100 productions, holding roles at Shakespeare's Globe and Bristol Old Vic. He sits on the boards of UK Theatre and Stage One, is a Clore Fellow, and is 14th in The Stage 100 Most Influential People and Partnerships in Theatre.
